100 ára afmæli Reykholts í Bláskógabyggð verður fagnað 20. maí 2026.

Miðvikudaginn 20. maí 2026 verða liðin nákvæmlega hundrað ár frá því að lagður var grunnur að byggð í Reykholti. Af því tilefni verður slegið upp afmælishátíð þar sem sögu þorpsins verða gerð góð skil með afhjúpun söguskilta og sögugöngu um þetta blómlega samfélag. Í tilefni tímamótanna hafa verið gerð fræðsluskilti um sögu þorpsins og efnt verður til hátíðar í Reykholti á afmælisdaginn 20. maí. Hátíðardagskrá hefst kl. 16:00 á horninu þar sem Skólabraut/Sólbraut mætast. Söguskiltin verða afhjúpuð þar formlega og síðan boðið upp á afmælis- sögugöngu með leiðsögn og fróðleik um Reykholt, gengið upp að Reykholtshver, Reykholtsskóla og Aratungu. Við lok göngunnar verður boðið upp á veitingar í Aratungu. |

Gjafagjörningurinn sem hóf uppbygginguna
Upphaf byggðar í Reykholti má rekja til þess að 20. maí 1926 gaf vinnumaðurinn Jón Halldórsson Biskupstungnahreppi land og fé fyrir barnaskóla sem byggður skyldi við Reykholtshver í landi Stóra-Fljóts. Engir mannabústaðir voru þá í Reykholtinu en bærinn á Stóra-Fljóti stóð í hæðinni rétt ofan við bæjarhúsin á Brautarhóli.
Nú eru hundrað ár liðin frá þessum gjafagjörningi og við minnumst upphafsins og þeirra sem ruddu brautina, hófu garðyrkju og búskap í Reykholti, beisluðu Reykholtshver, lögðu vegi og lagnir um svæðið. Fyrstu býlin voru byggð 1929-1952. Hér myndaðist fljótlega gott mannlíf og margir öflugir frumherjar komu að uppbyggingunni.
Lífæð byggðar og fjölmenningar
Reykholt hefur vaxið hratt undanfarin ár og þar blómstrar mannlíf og menning. Í dag eru íbúar tæplega 500 talsins og sannkallað fjölmenningarsamfélag. Reykholt er öflugasta ylræktarsvæði landsins, þar sem heita vatnið er svo sannarlega lífæð samfélagsins. Það knýr ekki aðeins gróðurhúsin heldur hefur verið forsenda þess nýsköpunarkrafts sem einkennir svæðið.

----- english ----- On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, exactly one hundred years will have passed since the foundation of Reykholt was laid. On that occasion, an anniversary celebration will be held where the history of the village will be well-deserved with the unveiling of historical signs and a history walk through this thriving community. To mark the milestone, educational signs have been made about the history of the village and a celebration will be held in Reykholt on the anniversary, May 20. The festival program begins at 4:00 PM at the corner where Skólabraut/Sólbraut meet. The historical signs will be formally unveiled there and then an anniversary history walk will be offered with a guide and information about Reykholt, a walk up to Reykholtshver, Reykholtsskóli and Aratunga. At the end of the walk, refreshments will be served in Aratunga. |

The donation that started the development
The beginning of the settlement in Reykholt can be traced back to the fact that on May 20, 1926, the worker Jón Halldórsson donated land and money to Biskupstungnahreppi for a primary school to be built at Reykholtshver in the land of Stóra-Fljót. There were no human settlements in Reykholt at the time, but the farm at Stóra-Fljót stood on the hill just above the farm houses at Brautarhól.
Now a hundred years have passed since this donation and we remember the beginning and those who paved the way, started gardening and farming in Reykholt, harnessed Reykholtshver, laid roads and pipelines around the area. The first farms were built between 1929-1952. A good human life soon developed here and many powerful pioneers joined the development.
The lifeblood of the settlement and multiculturalism
Reykholt has grown rapidly in recent years and human life and culture flourish there. Today, the population is almost 500 and it is a true multicultural community. Reykholt is the most powerful horticultural area in the country, where the hot water is truly the lifeblood of the community. It not only powers the greenhouses but has been a prerequisite for the innovative force that characterizes the area.
